FanDuel and DraftKings Strategy 101

Do you participate in NFL fantasy football daily fantasy sports (DFS) contests on either FanDuel or DraftKings? If so, have you been successful? Why? Or, more importantly, why not? Have you entered multiple contests during the week in which you had a pretty decent lineup formation and still ended up losing money on the week? Here at Rock Star Fantasy Football, we have heard time and again from people that say they play solid lineups that end up scoring over the pay line but still end up losing money when the week is over. How exactly does that happen? Well, in today’s blog post, we are going to discuss this extremely important topic. Because, in the end, isn’t the goal of this entire process about winding up with cash in your pocket as opposed to your opponent’s coiffures? Of course it is! So, read on and flip the script!

While it is a truism that crafting a high scoring DFS lineup is the primary goal in coming out on top in the contests, the manner in which you place your wagers is also of paramount significance! Especially in regards to lineup formations that end up scoring “near the bubble”, or put another way, close to the ultimate pay line in particular to the specific contest. The type of contests you enter and the amount of funds you allocate towards each contest is so very important to where you will end up each week after all of the contests you have entered has been tabulated and paid. This is simply a more detailed way to describe the importance of bankroll management. Without proper bankroll management, even above average DFS participants will end up either losing their hard earned money or, just as bad, severely limiting their upside winning potential. While bankroll management is a fairly easy concept to grasp, we see way too many players not “sticking to the program” and ultimately end up losing some coinage when they actually should have ended up on top when all of the week’s contests have been completed.

Now that you understand the reason for utilizing sound bankroll management, how exactly do you go about in getting the job done? Well, it’s actually very simple! Here at Rock Star Fantasy Football, we utilize the 80/20 method. Each week, regardless of the number of contests you enter, it is of utmost importance that you play 80% of your weekly allocated funds in “cash game” contests and the remaining 20% in “GPP tournament contests! Now, why is this so important? The entire reason boils down to simple math friends, simple math! Our objective remains the same, week in and week out. Make more money than you lose! This method has been proven over and over again, year after year. We strongly advise our customers to play 80% of their weekly funds in “50/50” and “double-up” cash game contests and the remaining 20% in GPP tournament formats. We also advise our clients to stay away from “H2H” or head to head contests as the likelihood you end up slated against a “shark” is quite high.

As a reminder, “50/50” cash game formats require you to finish in the top 50% of all entries and the house takes their “vig” from the final payout to the winners. In other words, if you place a $10 wager into this type of contest and finish in the top 50% of entries, you will win $9 after the house takes their share. Conversely, in “Double-Up” cash game contests, you will need to finish in the top 45% of the field to truly double your wager. The house takes their share by not paying out to the other 55% of entries. Moving onto “GPP Tournament” contests, the service provider typically pays a much larger sum to a severely reduced number of winners. As an example, a tournament style contest will divvy up the entire purse to only the top 10% of the entrants. Obviously, the ultimate winner takes home the largest prize with a diminishing amount paid to the remainder of the field up until the top 10% are paid. Again, this is only an example as each provider sets their tournament formats up differently. Some may pay the top 15% while others may only pay the top 7%. The gist of what we want you to grasp is that only a small percentage of entrants are paid in tournaments. However, GPP tournaments are where the big bucks are made! While we understand that the overwhelming percentage of readers here understand this concept, the strategy involved in only wagering 20% of your funds in weekly tournaments is extremely important!

Here at Rock Star Fantasy Football, our ultimate goal is to assist you in making money! Win more than you lose! We know this sounds simple but it takes disciplined bankroll management to come out on top over the course of a long season of wagering. Each week, we advise our customers exactly which contests to enter. As we rake in the winnings over the first several weeks of the season, we can then afford to kick the percentage of allocated funds from 20% to 25% into the tournament styled contests. Our system has proven effective, year over year as we maintain our disciplined approach.
